Hercules Compassionate Pet Euthanasia Program

The Hercules Compassionate Pet Euthanasia Program aims to provide free or low-cost euthanasia services for pets experiencing terminal illness, severe suffering, or end-of-life challenges, especially for families experiencing financial hardship. By providing free, compassionate care and support, we aim to honor the bond between pets and their owners and facilitate a dignified farewell during an emotionally challenging time.

WHO WAS HERCULES?

Sweet Hercules and his devoted dad, Zeus, joined our shelter program in May 2024 after facing housing challenges. They spent about seven weeks with us when Hercules suddenly lost his sight one morning. Initially thought to be a degenerative eye disease, he was referred to an ophthalmologist. Thankfully, during this time, his dad secured housing, allowing them to return home together about ten days later while we continued testing.

Hercules was always a joyful boy, adapting well to both his vision loss and the new environment. However, after a biopsy revealed cancerous cells, it became clear that he likely had a brain tumor. His dad faced the heartbreaking decision that no pet parent ever wants to make, but he was able to be by Hercules’ side as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

What matters most to us is that Hercules was able to spend this difficult time with his person. Thanks to the generosity of others, his family didn’t have to bear the financial burden of this loss. This fund is established in memory of Hercules, honoring the bond they shared and supporting families facing similar challenges.

Program Process

The Hercules Compassionate Pet Euthanasia Program is for:

  • Pet owners who are facing financial hardship

  • Pets diagnosed with terminal illnesses, experiencing significant pain, or having a poor quality of life (we do not have a general medical program and are unable to provide medical treatment or financial assistance for health issues)

  • Ruff Haven will refer pet owners to a local veterinary clinic to perform the euthanasia. A veterinarian will conduct a brief exam to make sure this is an appropriate decision.

  • Ruff Haven MUST authorize any procedures completed by the veterinary office. We are unable to pay for euthanasia services without permission from our team.

  • Aftercare Options- Ruff Haven will pay for group cremation and a paw print. Due to limited funds, we are unable to pay for private ashes.
