Description:

Fin is a 2 year old border collie mix, male.
About 40lbs.
Fin has great recall. He comes when asked and usually sits at our feet.
He hikes with us in the mountains, off leash. Putting him on leash is not a problem. He accepts the leash well.
We have been walking him on a nightly stroll, mostly unleashed.
He walks on leash in town well. He does not heal yet but he is ready to learn.
Fin loves the mountain bike. We have biked with him on leash (he is learning) in town.
He stays with us, off leash, when we mountain bike in the mountains. When we meet other dogs, he passes by other riders and dogs in order to keep up with us.
Fin is great with other dogs. He backs off when dogs are aggressive and is eager to play when he finds a willing partner.
He is house broken. Never any accidents.
Fin takes direction really well. When asked to make a change in behavior he usually does it without needing a reminder.
He is intensely interested in our chickens. I have trained him to sit 15 feet from the enclosure when I am out there. He stays there very well.
He can calm himself. I have seen him be excited, then asked to sit and he calms right down.
He does not bark. He has barked twice since he got here. Amazing
Fin can take a minute to warm to people but then greets them warmly. Several neighbors have become friends of his.
He does much better with positive reinforcement than he does with negative.

Fin does have things to work on. Fin’s owners should be aware of border collie’s need to have personal space. When people don’t respect his space his first reaction is to snap. Strangers or people who he has not established a bond should not violate his space by getting in his face or forcing him into a close situations. He is fine with cuddling when it is his idea.

We have had Fin for about a month. We realize he is not a perfect fit due to our grandchildren visiting frequently.
